Project Overview
GrowthPoint by Phase
Phase I (complete): In the first phase of the GrowthPoint project (2019), National Grid installed approximately 11,500 feet of new pipe between Cowesett Avenue in West Warwick and Middle Road in East Greenwich. At the end of 2019, natural gas was introduced to this newly-installed pipe to provide additional reliability for customers in the region.
Phase II (complete): In the second phase, which concluded in fall 2020, National Grid installed approximately 11,000 additional feet of pipe between Middle Road and the on-ramp to Route 4 Southbound in East Greenwich.
Phase III (in progress; see overview map): Beginning with ‘HDD 2,’ located just north of the on-ramp to Route 4 Southbound, Phase III will see the completion of pipe installation for the GrowthPoint project. Some of the pipe planned for installation in Phase III – specifically the section from just south of the Park-N-Ride to South Road – was actually completed in fall 2020, well ahead of the original project schedule. Once all of the pipe is installed and the sections connected, it will be tested and placed into service (anticipated late spring 2021).

National Grid regularly upgrades its electric and natural gas systems so that it may continue to provide Rhode Islanders with safe, reliable service for their homes and businesses. As part of that commitment, National Grid is planning to upgrade its natural gas distribution network in Southern Rhode Island beginning in the spring of 2019.
GrowthPoint is important for Rhode Island because it provides improved access to natural gas service to homes and businesses, and will feature the upgrade of a distribution main line from West Warwick south into East Greenwich. As each phase of the project is completed, we will have the ability to increase capacity to meet existing (and future) demand for the product, improve system reliability, and serve as an important catalyst for economic development in the region.
Natural gas is a desired fuel source for residential, commercial and industrial users; the GrowthPoint project will play an important role in providing natural gas service to Quonset Business Park and other economic development centers in a part of the state that is playing an increasingly important role in the state’s economy.
